Art history was always a field that seemed like a harmless dissection, and examination of art. Berger’s point of view was pretty enlightening in this way. The idea that art historians can create this hierarchy with art, and people blindly accept these decisions, much like the way we learn to trust language.
It is also interesting to think about how painting is deemed a true form of art. Originally, it makes sense that painting was important because it was the only medium that came closest to capturing reality. Now photography can come even closer to portraying this reality. However, many people still question photography as a true form of art. This just illuminates how the definition and important aspects of art are always changing. On the other hand, many conventions, such as the importance on painting in art, are still being upheld.
