6 PLACES

Grave:
Of all the place on the list, I felt the most uncomfortable here. The intrinsic value that others feel for this place, both humbled me, and made me feel as if i was intruding. The placement of the bench, further personified the grave by suggesting conversation. What continued to humble me, was the face that the bench was designed to seat more than one. This raised questions such as, "do groups come to meet here?" or "are visitors likely to run into each other"?

Courts:

The layout of the gym is perfect. This is done by positioning the bleachers out of sight when facing the hoop, and retractable practice rims (that allow less accurate players the opportunity to develop without tainting the real rim). It is wonderful to see a gym built for practicing, which then is converted into a game court, and not the other way around. This is important because every shot taken in a game, had thousands in its development.

Shoe Tree:

The placement of the tree is what makes it truly special. From the path it appears an extension of the forest behind it, while from behind it one cannot help but admire the human involvement. It serves almost as a buffer between the unknown and our campus. Although it's assumed that the activity was undertaken by all of the shoe throwers, it is interesting to note that some are tied together. This changes the whole attitude of their permanence, and the emotion it instills on people.

In front of the Grind

Its hard for me to construct an artistic depiction of such a plain space. Of all the places, this one is the most mediocre. It serves its purpose as an indoor unit that connects two shops. The colors are far from comforting, the lighting is overwhelmed by the adjacent stores, and the seating is stiff. No meaningful sense of place. The outside seating area does allow for a more scenic social gathering. During the day, people never fail to relax by the found, or sit on the steps. The contrast of the indoor outdoor preference is interesting.

Concert Hall:

This building is rather intimidating, both in stature and exclusiveness. Its seclusion from the main part of campus gives it a filter of purpose. This was apparent, because the average student has would not randomly end up here. The intimidating factor was also aided by the fact that I was not allowed in thanks to the lock.

Historic:

Beautiful waterfront property...ugly decaying structure. Although importance is placed in what the structure once was, all that remains is a rebuild eye sore. The back drop of the water presents and opportunity for a beautiful view during a sun set, but this area is closed after dark. I try to inspire myself into imagining it in its original setting, but all I could focus on was how much more fitting and oped field would be. This structure takes away from the fauna's aesthetically pleasing potential, while providing nothing in return.
